Recommended age: 5-7 years Place: Outdoors or in a larger indoor room Time required: 5-10 min
Materials/tools: None Purpose: Burn off energy Where in the process: At the beginning of a session or between sedentary moments
ABOUT THE METHOD
This method was created during one of Gatulabba’s design processes and is a variation of the game ‘Monsters and Jumping Jacks’. In this game, you are not jumping jacks but ‘gatulabbs. The game is good for creating a good atmosphere in the group or for relaxing after sedentary moments.
PREPARATIONS
No special preparation is required. The game works best outdoors or indoors in a room with plenty of open space.
HOW TO DO IT
Start by choosing one child to be the monster – the rest of the participants will be “gatulabbs”. The monster’s task is to catch the gatulabbs by walking with long strides and outstretched arms, like a zombie. The gatulabbs must only jump on their feet to avoid being caught by the monster, and they must constantly say ‘labba labba labba’. If a gatulabb is caught, he or she also becomes a monster and must help to catch more gatulabbs. The game ends when all the gatulabbs have become monsters.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
If you are outdoors, it can be useful to define the play area so that it is not completely impossible to catch the gatulabbs.
THE METHOD AS PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS
This method can be used as an icebreaker or when the group needs to break away.
