Recommended age: 8-18 years Place: In-or outdoors Time required: 10-30 min, depending on the size of the group
Material/tools: A brick or a Plastic bottle, paper, pens and timer Purpose: Getting started, having fun together, kick starting the creativity Where in the process: Anytime it is needed
ABOUT THE METHOD
This is an established method to enhance creativity, which is a good and effective exercise to warm up the brain, get the imagination going and have fun together. We usually use a brick, but you can also use other objects such as a plastic bottle.
PREPARATIONS
The method requires no special preparation other than access to paper, pens, bricks or other objects and a timer.
HOW TO DO IT
Distribute paper and pens to all participants. Explain the premise, i.e. that everyone should think of as many uses as possible for a brick in 5 minutes, and write them down. Start the time and join the exercise yourself. When the time is up, each person can tell what uses they have thought of. If there is a whiteboard or similar to write on, you can write down all the ideas to show how many ideas you could all come up with together.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
This exercise is not about coming up with as many answers as possible or as many ‘correct’ answers as possible (although that is what the children will probably try to do). It is about warming up their imaginations and having fun together.
THE METHOD AS PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS
The method works great as an icebreaker or to get the imagination going, but is not used to get a specific result.
TIP BOX
Join in yourself and come up with ideas. Bring ideas that may be unexpected or that may not fit in – it opens up fun conversations about whether the idea is actually possible or not.
