ABOUT THE METHOD

This is a crowd-pleaser. The method involves using sweets to describe a place based on feeling, appearance and content.

Using sweets as symbols for the abstract can be thought-provoking. You don’t have to put all the feelings into words, but can convey them through different pieces of candy.

PREPARATIONS

You will need to pick  and mix sweets in a wide range of colours and shapes and collect sweets with different expressions. If there are a lot of people in the group doing this task, you can create several bags of sweets, with the same content, and then divide the children into smaller groups.

Print out the method sheet available under downloads. Each participant needs one form each. Put the sweets in a visible place for each group.

HOW TO DO IT

  1. Start by setting out the sweets and then hand out the forms. Each form has one question and three fields. Of course, you can change the question and field headings to suit your project. For example, you could keep it quite general and ask ‘What does a place need to make you want to hang out there?’ or ‘What does this place need to make you want to hang out here?’.
  2. Ask the children to choose sweets that represent the feeling, look and content of the place. If you want, you can start by giving examples to make the task clearer, such as choosing your own sweets for the form and justifying them.
  3. Once everyone is ready, it is time for a presentation round. Let the children share their thoughts on their choices and remember to take notes so as not to miss any valuable information.
  4. Remember to take photos of all the papers with candies on them before they are eaten!

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

Check with the teacher/responsible adult beforehand that it is okay to work with sweets and whether the children can also eat the sweets or not. Do not choose sweets with nuts, due to the risk of allergies, or chocolate, due to the fact that it gets sticky easily.

THE METHOD AS PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS

This method can be used on its own as a fun exercise or at the beginning to get started creatively.
